Volunteer Train Driver – Goldfields Railway, Waihi
Join a passionate team delivering an unforgettable heritage rail experience between Waihi and Waikino. As a volunteer driver, you’ll help preserve local history and bring joy to passengers of all ages.

In this role, you will:

  • Operate heritage trains along a scenic route featuring farmland, river views, and three bridges (including one over a highway)
  • Complete pre-departure and pre-arrival safety checks and preparations
  • Collaborate with a supportive team to ensure smooth and safe journeys
  • Engage with passengers and contribute to a welcoming, memorable experience

A current driver’s licence is essential — no previous train driving experience required, as full training will be provided.

  • This role carries significant responsibility; we’re looking for conscientious individuals who can follow procedures and pay close attention to detail.
  • Reliable, methodical team players who enjoy structured routines will thrive in this role.
  • Minimum age 18 years and unless you have prior locomotive driving experience. You will initially have to train as a guard prior to undertaking driver training.

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

  • Ideally available once a week or once a fortnight
  • Seasonal support also welcome — especially during school holidays and peak cruise ship season (October to April)
